Arabesque, watercolor, 9 x 10½" (23 x 27 cm)
The graceful shapes of these vintage saltshakers appealed to me, but the colors were very bland, so I invented new combinations with more pizzazz, using
complementary colors to create a visual pop. For the background, I used fabric with a pattern that repeated the swirls of the birds’ tails but I replaced the original
colors with purple and black for a richer look. I used masking fluid to save the spots on the birds so I could freely blend colors to get the soft body contours.
Last, I lifted highlights to create the shiny look of the ceramic glaze.
