Heirlooms, watercolor, 10 x 10" (25 x 25 cm)
These vintage saltshakers triggered childhood
memories of a set in my grandmother’s china
cabinet, so I decided to pose them with some
heirloom tomatoes on a vintage tablecloth in her
memory. Set in a sunny window, the colors of the
shakers are well matched by the tomatoes, and
the bounce of color from the tomato onto the
redheaded bird was a wonderful bonus. I used
masking fluid to preserve the brightest spots,
plus the leaves on the tablecloth, then painted
wet-in-wet as well as wet-on-dry to create a
three-dimensional scene. I finished by lifting
highlights to create shine.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chris Beck earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in
the fine art program at the University
of Wisconsin, and then worked as a graphic designer
for many years. Since returning to painting, she
has won numerous awards for her watercolors. She
is a signature member of the National Watercolor
Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of
America, and Watercolor West.
