STAGE 6
STAGE 3 VALUE AND PATTERN ADJUSTING
I’m gradually adding value changes and patterns to the background, and one FOR FOCUS
of the pillows. Notice the movement evolving from the pattern of the carpet, Playing Monopoly
which creates an S-shape, directing your eye around—encompassing the figures. oil, 60 x 48” (152 x 122 cm)
I was debating with myself
at this point as to whether
I had adjusted the values
appropriately. I felt that the
lighter areas of the game board
and the pillow and blankets
that the kids were sitting on
needed to be pushed back and
subdued because they were
demanding too much attention.
The lower pillow needed to be
cooled down (alizarin instead
of orange) and contoured. You
might note that some of the
game pieces (a tiny thimble,
Scotty dog, and iron) are very
realistically rendered with a
very tiny brush in contrast to
the rest of the painting.
