Right: Girl in Gray, oil, 16 x 12" (41 x 30 cm)
This portrait of Emerald is a three-hour life pose in which I used grays and
deep burgundies with touches of green—gray being a unifying color.
Below: Max, oil, 38 x 28" (96 x 71 cm)
Fortunately, Max was ready and willing to model for his portrait. His
dad had commissioned a portrait of Max when he was 8 years old.
When this second portrait of Max was painted, he was 18; I talked to
Max for a while, just to put us both at ease, and I was observing his body
language: a stance that seemed to come naturally to him—so I had him
pose that way. His casual black attire was appropriate for the overall
look of the painting. He was, at the time, a student conductor so
I included some music stands behind him. The energy of the
background colors emulated music to me.
Right: The Violinist III, oil, 16 x 12" (41 x 30 cm)
This portrait of Natasha with violin was also a three-hour
painting. I concentrated on defining the facial features and
used an impressionistic approach to the rest of the painting.
