STAGE 3 VALUE AND PATTERN
I’m gradually adding value changes and patterns to the background, and one
of the pillows. Notice the movement evolving from the pattern of the carpet,
which creates an S-shape, directing your eye around—encompassing the figures.
STAGE 4 DEFINING FIGURES
I’m concentrating on defining the three figures and bringing
more color and value changes to their clothing. My color choices
are determined by value and temperature and their juxtaposition
to other colors. A little bit more pattern is added to the
pillows, the patterns being calligraphic in their application.

STAGE 5
PUNCHING COLORS AND DETAILS
Stage five brings the background to life with the color and pattern of
the carpet. Here I start varying the values of the carpet from dark in
the lower left to a mid-value in the upper right, thus bringing your eye
up to the “activity” of the painting. The complexity of the colors in the
carpet ranges from deep, dark, alizarin crimson and deep, dark, purple
to vibrant reds, turquoise and purple. The pillow patterns are evolving
at this point and the development of the bodies is more detailed,
making sure that all hands, fingers and toes are spot on.
