Queen Hatshepsut was the longest reigning female pharaoh in Egypt. My friend Danielle reminds me of a contemporary Hatshepsut. She,
the light, the dark stairway and a love of painting drapery were the inspiration behind this painting. I always paint with natural light. I find
artificial light washes out richness and shadows. I used the light and figure to keep the weight of focus on the left of the canvas, while the
drapery brings the eye around to the rest of the painting afterward. Again, wet on dry and alla prima techniques were used here.
