Working for many years in the graphic and printing industries, Peter Clarke returned to fi ne
art in the 1970s, taking any employment which would enable him to devote the majority of
his time to painting. Working towards abstraction, he developed a number of techniques
using collage, photography and other media - fi nally returning to a more fi gurative style,
 completing the circle.
Dark Pool was completed when Clarke lived in the Languedoc region of France, situated in
the mountains between Argeles and Sorede. The dark pool is a favourite spot for locals to
swim and just sit and look.
The rock depicted in Rock Face was located at the back of Clarke’s home in the south of
France and was completed over a long period of time. As it could be seen through the back
room of Clarke’s studio he could take his time and returned to the work constantly when the
light conditions appeared to be same.
Rough Water was completed on site, the scene was also situated in the mountains near
 Clarke’s Home.

PETER CLARKE studied at Camberwell School of Arts during the 1950’s, obtaining a solid grounding in life
drawing, painting, architecture, lettering and sculpture. For a number of years he and his wife ran a gallery
and studio in the south of France during which time Clarke received the Grand Prix for Painting at the
Salon International de Valmy (1998). Clarke’s work has been exhibited across the UK; at the Skylark Gallery
(London’s Southbank), The River Gallery, Barnes, The Contemporary Art Gallery, Twickenham, The Chelsea
Arts Fair and the affordable Arts Fair Battersea, London. In 2001 and 2002 Clarke mounted two successful
one-man shows at the Quaker Gallery, St. Martins Lane, London, UK. His work can be found in numerous
Private Collections across Europe and the USA.
