James Daniel Devlin
Born 1945
Lives and works in Cookstown, Northern Ireland
James Daniel Devlin is a mainly self-taught artist who expanded his range of mediums and processes after attending many classes locally; a mixture
of watercolour, acrylic and oils.
The portrait of Louise Lee is painted in oils on canvas and depicts the face of the young Actress from Liverpool, seemingly gazing out of an early
morning window, which illuminates her from beyond the frame of the work.
JAMES DANIEL DEVLIN developed an interest in art and photography whilst in the Royal Air Force and started developing and printing photographs at Hull University as
part of a colour photography seminar paid for by the RAF. After leaving the RAF in 1966, Devlin went freelance and started his own press, general, family and religious
photography business. Between 1970 and 1972, Devlin studied Photography at Liverpool Art College and matriculated with the Liverpool City Certifi cate in Photography; his
attendance made possible and fi nanced by his occupation as a telephone exchange engineer. Devlin continued with both professions for a number of years and retired
from telecommunications in 1993, taking on the role of local wedding and newspaper photographer, as well as creating images for calendars and greetings cards. He is
still practising photography for personal enjoyment and for his art discipline.
