Mark Connolly & Diego Zamora
Live and work in the UK

Mark Connolly and Diego Zamora’s work consists of merging several separate
coexisting places into a printed plain to create a series of hybrid objects. Through
the absorption of a multitude of places these objects form representations of
condensed time. The overlapping and compressing of time and space is central
in their joint investigation of 3D printing and painting. Rene Magritte’s works ´the
key of ice´, 'time transfi xed' and 'Not to be reproduced' offer plausible scenarios
that are represented in a direct and concrete manner. Connolly and Zamora
have elaborated on his traditional approach whilst introducing them into 3D
printed format.
Connolly and Zamora envisage a functioning system from the memory and
experience of others injected into the work via stolen imagery from social networks,
amongst other forms of imagery. They appropriate real life situations to create an
amalgamation of familiar, yet uncanny, sculptures.
By exploiting the commonalities in their individual practices, Connolly and Zamora
have identifi ed some traits within the medium of 3D printing that are contributing
to the development of a new form of expression. The 3D printed objects
accumulate labyrinthine qualities derived from a self conscious landscape. The
duo reiterate their relationship with the 2D by consistently lending conventional
forms of presentation.
MARK CONNOLLY studied Painting at Edinburgh College of Art between 2010 and 2014. DIEGO
ZAMORA is a PhD candidate at the Edinburgh College of Art, exploring the interrelations
between 3D printing technology and craft. His research is funded by the AHRC Design in Action
knowledge exchange hub. He holds a Masters in Product Design from Edinburgh College of
Art and an undergraduate degree in Design Engineering from Alfonso X University. He has
undertaken research in the areas of consumerism and identity, DIY culture and gamifi cation.
Diego has professional experience as a project manager of solar energy systems and has
worked as a swimming pool and spa designer.
