Mette Fruergaard-Jensen makes boxes in a wide variety of materials expressing her
abiding love for functional objects. These boxes are sculptural and functional at
the same time, her aim being a marriage between form, function and materials.
While she experiments with many traditional materials and methods it is important
to Mette that her work maintains a contemporary aesthetic.
She explores the use of different materials such as metal, plastic, resin, and
hardwood. Combining these various contrasting elements is essential to Mette’s
work and expresses her love of the silent language of materials.
METTE FRUERGAARD-JENSEN trained as a potter at the Art and Crafts School in Copenhagen,
now called the Danish Design School (1969) she then completed one year at the Art Academy
of Wroclaw, Poland (1977). In 1995 Mette began to develop an interest in other materials,
especially wood and metal, and moved to the UK in 2000, where she further pursued this shift
in focus. She has exhibited in a number of group exhibitions including ‘Celebrating Boxes’,
(a UK touring exhibition 2002), ‘Gifted’ at National Museum, Edinburgh, (2007), ‘Wych Elm’ at
Edinburgh Royal Botanic Garden (2009), ‘Unite’ Collins Gallery, Glasgow, UK (2011), SOFA -
