Lunch Line, watercolor, gouache,
watercolor pencils and waterbrush,
5 x 8" (13 x 20 cm)
I’m at the fairgrounds near the food
vendors, sitting on a low wall where
I have a good view of the people
waiting in line. No one notices I’m
sketching them, and they don’t stand
in any pose for more than 30 seconds.
When I see a pose that I like, I try to
grab the essence of it right away. Once
the pose shifts, I have two choices: keep
drawing from memory or find someone
else in a similar pose. Sketching in
monochrome reduces the variables.
I use a couple of water
brushes, one filled
with water and the
other with a
gray-blue ink.
Fig Newton, watercolor and colored pencil, 5 x 8" (13 x 20 cm)
I’m at the Dutchess County Fair in New York state. I meet James “Fig” Newton, who is operating the ball toss game in Kiddie Land. The goal of the game is to toss a ping-pong
ball into one of the glass bowls floating by in a wading pool. There isn’t much business, so I ask him if I can sketch him. He’s glad for the diversion. The portrait takes
about an hour. I use watercolor and colored pencils, with a little gouache for the edge lighting, highlights, teeth and the blue collar. When I show it to him, he shakes
my hand and says, “Good. You got my scowl.”
