Old Friends, gouache, 5 x 8" (13 x 20 cm)
I’m in a restaurant with two art friends, David Starrett and Sam Clayberger. They are teachers who mentored me and my wife, Jeanette, 35 years ago when we were in
art school. I paint them in gouache while we wait for supper. Although they’re both talking and moving and telling stories, one or the other of them is always close to
the angle I’ve committed to. Having them moving helps me to understand their character. In fact, a pair of scientists concluded in a scientific study that we recognize
people better when they’re moving. You can read the study online by Googling: “‘Why are moving faces easier to recognize?’ by K. Lander and L. Chuang.”
Frank Working Glass, casein, 5 x 8" (13 x 20 cm)
My son Frank is a glass artist, and I paint him as he works.
The warm glow from the flame lights the front surfaces.
Some cool fluorescents light his back and the top of his
head. I use casein in a watercolor sketchbook that’s held
on a tripod easel. Having the work up high, close to my line
of sight, makes accurate measurements
much easier. I like where I’m sitting
because my work is lit by the window
behind me. The brim of my hat shields
my eyes from the dangerously bright
orange light of the torch.
