Paul Gorman’s practice revolves around the exploration of
human vision through photography, looking at themes such
as perception, phenomenology, light, objects, and nature's
way of healing and nourishing Man.
Gorman uses photography as a way of representing these
ideas and uses multiple exposures to suggest how new
perceptions merge with existing ones. Through theories
about perception, vision and light, the work explores how
the build-up of knowledge through the senses can create a
more accustomed account of the relationship we have to
 the external world.
Gorman’s work is deeply associated with themes of a more
photographic nature, experimenting with techniques that
are inherent within the medium, incorporating many of the
techniques that allow a photograph to be created.

A contact print is made by the fi lm being in contact with
the photographic paper, which is suggestive of the sense of
touch that needs to happen in order to see, and the camera
to depict. Lith Printing was used as a method to exaggerate
the grains in the dark areas and create smooth highlights.
This was a conscious effort to challenge the material nature
and the use of chemicals that is becoming less apparent.
He is also interested in the way we are drawn to photographs
as close representations of the real world and their evidently
transparent effect. By incorporating all these different
effects Gorman’s images challenge what we know about
the world through vision, which consequently reconstructs a
challenging and stimulating impression on the viewer.

Impression investigates Phenomenology - the structure of
different forms of experience including perception, thought,
memory, imagination, emotion and desire. Through the use
of multiple exposures the work depicts joining together,
combination and amalgamation of many different images
of the same object, the way knowledge is built up through
perceiving. This layering also allows Gorman to capture all of
the available light and shadow from the landscape, which
merges together to create images that are both beautiful
and mysterious. The images are created to intentionally
direct your attention to something in the world.
