Daniel Williams returned to art seriously in 2009 after
leaving it behind for nearly a decade to pursue a
career as a travelling musician. With his passion for
art fully restored, he had gained the confi dence to
enter an Open Art Exhibition in Portsmouth in 2010
and won the People’s Choice Award. Entering his
second Open Art Exhibition in 2012 he won 1st Prize
in the Judges’ Award and then again in 2014.
Williams is inspired by many different things but mainly
by the challenge of capturing a likeness in a portrait,
textures and light from nature. Michelangelo Merisi
Da Caravaggio is an artist whose work infl uences
Williams practice; combining realistic observations of
the Human condition both physical and emotional,
with a dramatic use of lighting. Such is the infl uence,
Williams has Caravaggio’s portrayal of David and
Goliath Tattooed on his arm.
The idea for Time To Refl ect came about from
spending many long solitary hours in the studio which
Williams found very therapeutic. Deciding to capture
his time of thinking and refl ecting in a rather literal
way, this work was produced on four large pieces of
paper at right angles so that a sense of depth could
be achieved to produce the 3d illusion.
DANIEL WILLIAMS is a self-taught artist living in Gosport on the
South Coast of England. Regularly exhibiting nationally and
internationally, he specialises in portraiture. In 2011 Williams
was commissioned to paint a mural for the Royal Navy at
Portsmouth’s historical dockyard opened by Princess Anne,
and in 2012 was commissioned to paint a second Mural
for the Royal Navy, this time at The Royal Navy Submarine
Museum, Gosport. Williams also holds art classes at The Art
Place, Gosport, teaching young local artist’s techniques in
drawing and painting. Williams is also a musician and singer/
songwriter and gigs regularly on the South Coast of the UK.
