Penny Phillips
Penny Phillips is a sculptor, artist, and teacher based in York. Her work concentrates on capturing the
movement and the essential wildness of her subject matter. She uses a limited color palette, creating depth
with slips and oxide washes while attempting to retain the raw nature of the textural surface. Penny has
worked in ceramics for almost 20 years, in a range of different mediums. In 2009, a trip to a wild bird
sanctuary sparked a passion to express the nature of wild things in clay. This passion for capturing the beauty
of British wildlife in her work has continued for the last 12 years. More recently, she has begun to develop her
work in a new direction. Mainly focussing on primates, and particularly the relationship between parent and
child, Penny has created a series of larger portrait studies, which endeavor to capture expressions and
complex interactions. This has begun a deeper commitment to both understanding and raising awareness for
the beauty of our wildlife and the many endangered species at risk of extinction.
