Shaun Hall has been making sculptural ceramic work since
graduating from University in 1998. He was drawn to make
"Raku" in particular because of the immediacy and spontaneity
of the fi ring process. The Potter can directly infl uence the
outcome to some extent - either during the fi ring itself (inside
the kiln chamber) or through the cooling procedure and "post
fi ring reduction", enabling the development of colour and
textures. Consequently each individual piece can be altered
irrevocably, for good or ill.
Hall’s work tends to be sculptural and often infl uenced by
ancient and archaic objects or tools as well as vessel forms;
he has never been interested in making purely practical or
functional pottery.
Nuclear Jug IV started out on paper as a series of drawings.
Here Hall began to exaggerate its basic elements beyond
practical use or function. He believes that every work
in ceramic still has some kind of function - even if that is
somewhat obscured. The piece still performs as a kind of ritual
object to be considered, perhaps cherished, on some high
altar, plinth or shelf.
SHAUN HALL was educated at Shenfi eld School, Thurrock Technical
College, Middlesex University and the Institute of Education, London.
Hall graduated in 1998 with a 2:1 in 3d Ceramic Design. Notable
clients have included Selfridges and Co. and most recently - Arrup
Associates. Hall’s work has been featured in publications including;
British Studio Potters Mark, published by Bloomsberry in 2015, Ceramic
Review, 500 Raku and Handmade in Britain - Volume 1. Hall’s work has
been featured in gallery exhibitions across the UK, and worldwide,
including Paris, Osaka, Kyoto and New Delhi. In 2013 Chelmsford
Museum in Essex acquired one of his jugs for their collection of Studio
Pottery. In 2014 Hall was asked to participate in a world-wide exhibition
of contemporary Raku Potters’ work at Sedona, Arizona, USA.
