Satomi Sugimoto has always been attracted to forms and lines since she was a child. Everything in the world has those fundamental
elements and she sees the undeniable beauty of them, regardless of whether it's natural or artifi cial.

Sugimoto feels her art-making is a spiritual process; a search for the essence of objects and a process of purifi cation where a
single element is explored, honed and expressed, using a rich range of humble materials such as paint, ink, enamel, plastic and
clay, or whatever material best expresses the idea she seeks out.

Sugimoto combines her sculptures with a very sensitive use of painting to express the richness and complexity of natural forms.
She sees motifs of life refl ected in her work including organic forms, elemental forces, body parts of humans, insects and animals.

In the process of art-making, Sugimoto loses her sense of self and becomes a cipher that borrows and expresses the beauty of the
world. These are the moments when she realises that she is also one of those simple objects existing in this universe, allowing her
to not only act as an observer, but also play a part in what is being observed. It is through this process that Sugimoto connects
herself with the world and continues to make work.
SATOMI SUGIMOTO was born in Fukuoka, Japan and received her BFA from School of Visual Arts in New York, USA. She now lives and works in Tokyo.
